The article in the most recent News Letter is on the Missional Church. My thesis in that article is that we do not need all the qualifying labels attached to the church. This will surely position me for some 'brick-bats', lobbed most probably from both sides of the issue. That goes with the territory.
None of us enjoy criticism. We are wise to always listen with a discerning ear to our critics as they may in fact have some valid observations that if heeded will be to our benefit. It takes incredible TENACITY to thrive in the ministry today. if the battles were substantive, we would do better. Most of the battles are the equivalent of "Black Flies" on a canoe trip in the Adirondacks in May. Annoying but little else. My prayer is that these brief thoughts on tenacity and the example of Caleb will strengthen and encourage you Pastor. As Paul exhorted the Galatians, 'Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap if we do not give up (Gal. 6:9).
Caleb has long been one of my favorite biblical personages. I marvel at his TENACITY. He made the right decisions. He trusted God. He obeyed. He also endured 40 years in the wilderness as a consequence of the disobedience of other so called leaders" If you join your ministry future with IUS, you will also taste the bitterness of wilderness wanderings as a consequence of the disobedience of other so called leaders.
Caleb stayed focused. He knew that His God was going to give him that portion of the Promise Land that had been allocated for him. I suspect he dreamed often and longingly about that land. Rightly so. What amazes me about Caleb is his dignity. It is not recorded that he ‘bad mouthed’ those ten so called leaders who were responsible for putting him in the wilderness for forty years. That gentlemen is godly tenacity. May it be true of all of us as well.
Joshua 14:6-15 Then the sons of Judah drew near to Joshua in Gilgal, and Caleb the son of Jephunneh the Kenizzite said to him, "You know the word which the LORD spoke to Moses the man of God concerning you and me in Kadesh-bamea. "I was forty years old when Moses the servant of the LORD sent me from Kadesh-bamea to spy out the land, and I brought word back to him as it was m my heart. "Nevertheless my brethren who went up with me made the heart oft he people melt with fear; but I followed the LORD my God fully. "So Moses swore on that day, saying, 'Surely the land on which your foot has trodden will be an inheritance to you and to your children forever, because you have followed the LORD my God fully.' "Now behold, the LORD has let me live, just as He spoke, these forty-five years, from the time that the LORD spoke this wont to Moses, when Israel walked in the wilderness; and now behold, I am eighty-five years old today. "I am still as strong today as I was in the day Moses sent me; as my strength was then, so my strength is now, for war and for going out and coming in. "Now then, give me this hill country about which the LORD spoke on that day, for you heard on that day that Anakim were there, with great fortified cities; perhaps the LORD will be with me, and I will drive them out as the LORD has spoken." So Joshua blessed him and gave Hebron to Caleb the son of Jephunneh the Kenizzite until this day, because he followed the LORD God of Israel fully.
Recabites Jer. 35 'You shall not build a house, and you shall not sow seed and you shall not plant a vineyard or own one; but in tents you shall dwell all your days, that you may live many days in the land where you sojourn.' "We have obeyed the voice of Jonadab the son of Rechab, our father, in all that he commanded us, not to drink wine al] our days, we, our wives, our sons or our daughters, nor to build ourselves houses to dwell in; and we do not have vineyard or field or seed. "We have only dwelt in tents, and have obeyed and have done according to all that Jonadab our father commanded us.
Paul Acts 20:22-31 "And now, behold, bound in spirit, I am on my way to Jerusalem, not knowing what will happen to me there, except that the Holy Spirit solemnly testifies to me in every city, saying that bonds and afflictions await me. "But I do not consider my life of any account as dear to myself, so that J may finish my course and the ministry which I received from the Lord Jesus, to testify solemnly of the gospel of the grace of God. "And now, behold, I know that all of you, among whom I went about preaching the kingdom, will no longer see my face. 'Therefore, I testify to you this day that I am innocent of the blood of all men. "For I did not shrink from declaring to you the whole purpose of God. "Be on guard for yourselves and for all the flock, among which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers, to shepherd the church of God which He purchased with His own blood. "I know that after my departure savage wolves will come in among you, not sparing the flock; and from among your own selves men will arise, speaking perverse things, to draw away the disciples after them. "Therefore be on the alert, remembering that night and day for a period of three years I did not cease to admonish each one with tears.
Tenacity is staying on course even when the night is dark, the the way is brutal, the criticism is sharp and the reward seems only a distant mirage. Blessed is the man who perseveres under trial, because when he has stood the test, he will receive the crown of life that God has promised to those who love him. (James 1:12).

Wise Leaders - Tough Times
Who watches the Dow Jones Averages these days and just gets a positive rush? NOT!!
These are the most traumatic times in my lifetime. There is trumoil on a global scale. The economy is in the tank. The messiah complex reigns in Wash DC. Remember, salvation never has and never will come out of DC. I am from the government and I am here to help you. Right!
I am suggesting that each of our readers develop a "Plan B" strategy for their own family and for the assembly they worship and serve with. It consists of four (4) simple factors. Here they are.
1. Celebration - Where & When will you gather for Worship if there is a disruption in the supply of gas or other factors that may prevent the continuation of your current routines? Corporate Praise & Worship should not be dictated by circumstance.
2. Transportation - What if you cannot purchase gasoline? Is there a way to car pool, meet in homes in geographic regions, simply walk. You won't even need to get on the treadmill if you walk.
3. Communication - What if your cell phone, Blackberry, etc. does not function? I think all the Carrier Pigeons are dead. So, how will we connect if the current means are not available?
4. Preservation - What will you drink if the water supply is contaminated? What will you eat if Wal Mart suddenly has no stuff on the shelves because the delivery trucks did not arrive? A rubber maid tub containing a few thoughtfully chosen items may be a wise addition to one of your closets.
I live in SC. We have Hurricanes. There are always those people who ignore all the warnings until the diaster strikes. We had a former Governor who botched an evacuation and he got to retire early as a result of the lack of planning. Perhaps just a little prudent action and preparation will prove beneficial in the days ahead.
He who gathers crops in summer is a wise son,
but he who sleeps during harvest is a disgraceful son. (Prov. 10:5)

The Courage to Lead
The Courage to Lead
Courage, real godly courage, is a rare commodity. But then, we don't need a multitude - - just a small band of COURAGEOUS and dedicated servant leaders. They understand the task, the difficulty and the challenges. Seeing all of this they say, "What are we waiting for?"
God and a man or a band of men with courage is the most significant majority the world has ever known. Courage is neither reckless nor foolish. It is bold and guided by Scripture and the Holy Spirit. That guidance almost always puts you in a counter-culture posture. God always delights to identify men who in times of darkness trust the light of special revelation. Trust God and press on.
A sad commentary on the church in America is that she has been co-opted by a pseudo democratic process. She votes on everything. Majority rules. Robert's Rules etc. It is a wise and prudent Leader who leads and does not endeavor to dictate or, as Scripture posits, 'Lord it over God's people'. However, no Leader should ever permit a "vote" to be taken concerning the clear and unambiguous statements of Scripture.
As I communicate with Pastors around the country, much of their consternation is a direct result of their failure to engage in careful, accurate and precise exegesis of the Scripture. When we know with certainty what God has said, ours is to do, not vote or negotiate. Opposition is a classic response to revelation because of sin. Trust God. Honor Him. Lead from a posture of obedience and let those who would rebel suffer the consequences of their rebellion. That men is COURAGE!
Israel, under the guidance of Moses sent twelve spies into the land. Only two of those men were true leaders. Ten of them were imposters. (Read this history in Numbers 14. Notice God's response to cowardice expressed in Num. 14:36-38). The church needs a legion of Leaders whose character is that of Joshua and Caleb. Read Rev. 21:7-8 for a perspective on the end result of cowardice - - not a happy thought!
So where are you in this vital arena of Courage? Well worth evaluating.
1 Chron. 28:20 Then David said to his son Solomon, "Be strong and courageous, and act; do not fear nor be dismayed for the LORD God, my God, is with you. He will not fail you nor forsake you until all the work for the service of the house of the LORD is finished.
2 Chron. 15:2,8 - Asa But you, be strong and do not lose courage, for there is reward for your work." Now when Asa heard these words and the prophecy which Azariah the son of Oded the prophet spoke, he took courage and removed the abominable idols from all the land of Judah and Benjamin and from the cities which he had captured in the hill country of Ephraim. He then restored the altar of the LORD which was in front of the porch of the LORD.
Ezra 10:4 "Arise! For this matter is your responsibility, but we will be with you; be courageous and act."
Haggai 2:4 But now take courage, Zerubbabel,' declares the LORD, 'take courage also, Joshua son of Jehozadak, the high priest, and all you people of the land take courage,' declares the LORD, 'and work; for I am with you,' declares the LORD of hosts.
Acts 23:11 But on the night immediately following, the Lord stood at his side and said, ‘Take courage; for as you have solemnly witnessed to My cause at Jerusalem, so you must witness at Rome also."

By The Content of Their Character
I am writing this BLOG Post on the eve of Inauguration Day. Two reasons for this. One, I want to make some observations that have to do with the incoming Administration. Two, I am leaving the country and will not return until the day this post will be sent to the recipient list. Today is the date set aside in our calendar of Holidays as Martin Luther King Day. He is credited with the quote that serves as the title of this BLOG Post.
Historically the Clergy have been "Watchman on The Wall" of culture and nations. The incoming Administration is cited as supporting numerous social policies that are utterly and absolutely in direct and arrogant defiance of the Scripture, the Special Revelation of God to man. I am going on record as a Watchman to state publicly with clarity and grace my opposition to those policies. That opposition is rooted and grounded in the text of Scripture. This issue is not one of political affiliation, Republican or Democrat. It is not one of race; Black, White, Asian or any other ethnic derivation. We are not a hyphenated people - we are Americans! It matters not one iota what any opinion or legislative action states when such opinion or statements are in defiance of the clear declarations of Scripture. The basis for my comments is a joyful endeavor to live in alignment with the revelation the Sovereign God of the Universe has given us of Himself.
Character is an objective issue. The definition of good character is based upon Truth that is Absolute. That Truth never changes thus character and the constructs of social policy are also static and stable, not fluid and ever changing. The issues to which I refer are:
Abortion - the incoming administration supports the termination of fetal life, even fetal life outside the womb in a viable condition. That is pure and simple murder. Life begins at conception and enjoys the sacred privilege of being an Image Bearer. I stand opposed to any and all abortive procedures for this reason. The pursuit of happiness is a trite and meaningless blather when you are not granted the dignity of life.
Homosexuality - The incoming administration supports the practice of homosexuality. This conduct is condemned by Scripture and must be recognized as sin pure and simple. It should be pointed out that theft, greed, drunkenness, slander and swindling are also condemned in the same passage. As a culture we do not favorably endorse any of these other sins. Why? Because they are just that. Christians do not hate homosexuals. We in fact are one of the few elements of our culture that truly loves them by expressing with compassion, gentleness and candor the Truth about this conduct.
Socialism - I have invested 15 years in exchanges with the editorial board of our newspaper addressing this issue. When benevolence is conscripted, it is not benevolence, it is legalized plunder. Taking resources from those who have acquired those resources legally and honestly is theft even though it is sanctioned by the powers that be. The redistribution of wealth by government thuggery is theft regardless of what euphemistic labels that government may choose to disguise this fact. We live in a nation among people who have discovered that they can, in the words of Alexis de Tocqueville, 'vote themselves largess'.
I will pray for the incoming Administration as Scripture commands that I must. I do so to honor the God I serve. I also see in these policies the destruction of all that our nation was built upon and has stood for over the two centuries plus that we have existed.
I say with Habakkuk "I will stand at my watch and station myself on the ramparts; I will look to see what he will say to me, and what answer I am to give to this complaint (Hab. 2:1). May God sustain us and bless our land. May the Shepherds of this land raise their voices as one man in defiance of all that is sin and dishonors our God. Sola Deo!

The Correlation Factor - Maturity & Unity
In the recent past I met with a Denominational figure. After considering what IUS offers to churches with genuine and serious interest, he shared the following. "Tom, I would really like to take our churches through the Transformation Process IgniteUS provides. However, I cannot do that. I invest almost all of my time serving as a referee in a variety of church squabbles. The level of conflict just continues to escalate and I see no end to that trend."
What does that tell us about the spiritual condition of those who make up those assemblies? It seems clear that persons who are embroiled in constant rancor and conflict within the church are at the very least in need of corrective discipline and very well may be flat out lost, unredeemed. Conflict is almost always the result of two sin stained people seeking to impose their agenda on others. Neither considers the word of God. Neither is receptive to a careful exegesis of the text of Scripture. Neither has any inclination to be in submission to their Leaders or to Absolute Truth. They are hell bent on getting "their way" regardless of the cost or price that must be paid to do so.
Denominational structures include entire Departments titled "Conflict Resolution". If my readers examine the content of the approaches applied by these entities, there is little or no application of the Scripture. The Number 1 reason for decline in the church in America is CONTROL. People are all sinners so the presence of conflict is not surprising. What is utterly astonishing is that there is an attempt to find resolution through a process that is not rooted and grounded in the Bible.
When Paul wrote to the Ephesians concerning the various gifted men that God gave to the church, he cited among others Pastor/Teachers (Eph. 4:12). A chief responsibility of these men is building up the Body of Christ. Then in Eph. 4:13 he equates unity - knowledge - maturity. If there is an absence of unity it may very well be that there is a definite lack of knowledge and certainly an absence of maturity.
I suspect that if we were to gather objective data on each person causing trouble in the churches of America we would find a one to one correlation between their lack of knowledge of God's Word and maturity in the fulness of the Image of Christ.
So, until the LORD returns Pastor, continue to teach and preach the text. Love people with the love of Christ. Encourage, Rebuke, Exhort, Correct and DO NOT permit anyone to despise you, to "think around you" (Titus 2:15). In doing so, God will use you to save some, even from themselves.
